When we heard Kelly’s wedding story, it truly gave us goosebumps. She married the love of her life James in a stunning natural looking wedding, all captured perfectly by their photographer Brad Wakefield
How did he pop the big question?
We were heading to the Peak District for a camping trip and we stopped for a picnic. Despite the fact we were starving, James was set on finding the most picturesque spot he could and we ended up at Carsington Water in Derbyshire. Once we settled on a pretty spot, he re-enacted a moment from our first trip away together to Paris when we were 17, where I sliced my finger cutting an orange- only when I went to get him a plaster from his bag he’d placed my beautiful ring in the bottom of the box. It was a very James proposal – I loved it!
When and where did you get married?
We got married in Bruton, Somerset, close to where we both grew up, in the beautiful garden of Gants Mill. We knew we’d love it there before we even visited, and booked as soon as we did – it was perfect! We chose to get married on the last August bank holiday, 2 years after we got engaged. We later realised it was James’s parent’s wedding anniversary the very same day, which made it extra special.
Did you have a specific theme or colour scheme?
We decided on navy and blush pink, with an added splash of coral and red to liven it up! We also incorporated lots of natural greens and creams. We didn’t have a theme, but we love to travel and tried to incorporate that into our day here and there.
How did you feel when you said yes to the dress?
I didn’t want to take it off! I remember going into work that night and feeling like I was too excited to focus. But I was nervous too – I had fallen in love with two very different dresses, one was exactly what I’d imagined I’d pick, and the other was the one I ended up choosing! So, I was a little unsure if I’d made the right choice until I went in for my fitting and got to fall in love with it again.
How did you choose your veil?
I don’t think I can really say that I chose my veil – when I first found my dress I wasn’t even sure I wanted one! The girls in the bridal store suggested I try the Joyce Jackson veil because the lace around the edge matched the lace around my dress, and the second I put it on I knew I had to have it! It was so light and delicate and perfectly completed my dress.
Do you have any advice for brides to be?
The best advice we were given was to take some time out together and soak it all in – we snuck off once the party had started and sat on a bench outside, listening to everyone inside the marquee singing and dancing. It was perfect, and it’s a moment we’ll both never forget. And also, try not to stress, remember that at the end of the day you’ll be married to the person you love, and so the day will be perfect no matter what!
